Umělcův domov v bílém

An Art Enthusiast’s home.

Russian artist and art theorist, Vasily Kandinsky once described the color white as “a great silence that shrouds its life from our understanding…not a dead silence but one pregnant with possibilities”. He lived generations ago, but we feel that this contemporary villa by Beel and Achtergael Architects would have befitted a true art enthusiast like him.

Tel Aviv Muzeum umění

The elegant design for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art Amir Building resolved the tension between its tight, triangular site, and the museum’s need for a set of large rectangular galleries. Architecture firm Preston Scott Cohen, Inc. solved the problem by using slightly twisting geometric surfaces to connect the disparate angles between the galleries and their context. The individual galleries are organized around the „Lightfall,“ a spiraling 87-foot-tall atrium. This provides abundant natural light, which is in turn refracted into the deepest recesses of the partly underground building. The new building also refers to the original building, as if it has a „family resemblance,“ while still relating to new Israeli architectural culture.

Tazmania Ballroom – Hong Kong

Tom Dixon’s career has taken him from discovering the idea for the S-bend chair while welding motorcycle parts, to being one of the hottest designers of lighting, furniture and interiors, and to occupying the chair of Creative Director at the venerable Finnish Artek.

Dixon’s latest showpiece, Tazmania Ballroom in Hong Kong, opened recently in the Central District (Lan Kwai Fong) where more than 100 bars, restaurants and entertainment venues attract people from around the world.

Tazmania’s owner is Hong Kong entertainment entrepreneur Gilbert Yeung Kei-lung. With his British boarding school and Canadian college upbringing, he wanted a British private-club atmosphere, but without the stuffiness.

He tapped Dixon’s Design Research Studio and lead designer Helene Bangsbo Andersen who employed refined James Bondish snobbery with its retro high-tech and combined it with a confident, cool club atmosphere.

The result is an exclusive and glamorous mix of a pool hall/private club/dance club/night club. Golden pool tables are magically lifted to the ceiling making room for one of Hong Kong’s largest dance floors where resident DJs keep the carefully screened guests hopping with the latest Funktion One ound system. The British street culture is emphasized with the staffers attire: they wear Doc Martens and Fred Perry.

Dixon’s own pieces decorate the opulent space including the Cone, Pipe and Copper Shade lights and the Offcut Stool.

Gilbert Yeung is also the founder of the Dragon-I bar and restaurant, Busy Suzie and Brother & Sister store and cafe. He is the son of Albert Yeung Sau-Shing, Hong Kong entertainment tycoon and chairman of the media conglomerate Emperor Entertainment Group. Tuija Seipell

Dream Home

Dream Home : Lake House by John Robert Nilsson

It’s the sort of house that adults would disappear for a week long party at….it’s the sort of house you wake up in and call your boss to say you’re, “having a sick day” simply because this house is that amazing, that you’d want to ditch all other plans just so you could sink into the cozy, “couch pit” (for lack of a better term) all day long, with a group of friends, or yourself, a bottle of Pinot Grigio and a good book. Designed by John Robert Nilsson Architects, this home sits perched above it’s woodsy, natural elements like a beacon of modern/contemporary design hope. The infinity pool pours over the the slate balcony, with a seamless connection between nature and design- rather than feeling like you’re swimming in a pool, this infinity pool conjures up ideas of swimming in a natural spring, minus all the creepy crawlers that come along with it. The interior is minimal, unfussy and straightforward- the floor to ceiling windows bring the outdoors, in and the design speaks for itself- no need to mess with something that was built with perfection from the beginning right?! It’s homes like these that are so complete, it makes moving in and leaving all the boxes from your old place behind- I could make a home for myself in that little couch nook outside, I’d be one happy camper, no pun intended.
